Over the 18 months, I have been on the receiving end of numerous requests from investors to assist with diligence on purported AI tools that will become the equivalent of Semrush/Ahrefs for AI visibility. I understand the desire to be an early investor in a company with the potential to be category-defining, but these are still very early days.

In this post, I will share what I tell each of these investors. In the interest of not tilting any scales, I will only mention the late-stage brands like Ahrefs, Semrush, and Similarweb, which have long proven the profitability of tools that track search rankings, analyze competitors, and deliver traffic insights.
